KUCHING: Computer gaming is not necessarily a bad thing for youths, said Minister in the Chief Ministers Department Datin Fatimah Abdullah.

She said modern research and studies had shown that games could help sharpen a persons motor skills and ability to think creatively and strategically.

Some students will go to cybercafes while waiting to be picked up from school or for classes to start in the afternoon session, she said.

Earlier on, Fatimah announced that the National Computer Competition 2011 19th series would be held on Dec 4 at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

She said this was the second time the competition would be held in the state and it was opened to primary school pupils.

The competition will incorporate drawing, typing on the computer and the basic knowledge of it. Theyre -ing to get some 500 participants, she said.

Fatimah said the government was supportive of this event since it helped to promote IT literacy among the young.

She said the government had begun by getting children all over and also community leaders in rural areas, to miliarise with the basics.

She said now it hoped to get the people miliarised with the various functions and programmes that could be used to cilitate work and learning processes.

The competition is organised by Dynabook Computer Centre (S) Sdn Bhd nike air max shoes, Unimas and the Federation of Kuching and Samarahan Chinese Associations Youth Section.
